After three years of operation, BGSU Dining made a decision based on the student body to replace Pub 1910 with Cantina 1910. BGSU Dining Director of Marketing, Communications and Technology, Jon Zachrich, talked about how students helped to make a positive shift in the dining experience.
In response to wanting a faster dining experience, customers can go up to the register to put in their order, take a table marker to their seat and then receive the order. Allowing for a larger number of orders in a shorter time frame.
The shift away from the pub-style food was also a result of student input. Every October BG Dining sends out surveys, “Voice To Vision,” to figure out what it is that students want.
“One of the highest scores was actually, like a Tex-Mex Mexican, because really, if you look at prior to this year, the only place we really had Mexican food consistently was Cabo over in Carollin Place,” Zachrich said.
To stay on brand, Cantina 1910 will also continue to serve nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages. Matching the theme of a cantina, there will be added non alcoholic margarita options.
“So we’re trying to expand that out also just because in general, non-alcoholic people who are looking for non-alcoholic kind of fun options. This is growing and growing,” he said.
Trivia nights will also be returning every Wednesday at the restaurant, though karaoke was not as popular there is potential for its return.
“We will be doing some karaokeies, but it’ll be like one big karaoke night during the semester, not like every week. We found that seems to work a little bit better, especially if we pair it with a student organization,” he said.
In comparison to Pub 1910, Cantina 1910 looks to be cheaper and a frequent visit for students.
“That was one thing we did hear from students that they were excited about that they would always go to the pub and blow a lot of their meal plan because they were treating themselves at the pub, but they could only do that once or twice a semester. Now, with this kind of setup, I feel like more students are going to be going there frequently.”
