Students at Bowling Green High School walked out of class on Thursday, Feb. 19 at 8:30 a.m. in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
A group of students gathered outside of the high school holding signs, chanted phrases such as “ICE out” and a few students also gave speeches with a megaphone.
This is amid a national uprising in high school walkouts organized by students within the past few months in response to ICE activity.
In Toledo, students at Whitmer High School organized a walkout Bowling Green High School students organize walkout to protest ICE
on Feb. 11 to protest ICE, according to WTOL11.
Bowling Green High School provided a statement to BG Falcon Media regarding the walkout:
“Bowling Green High School administration was made aware that some students were planning a student-led, voluntary walkout today during non-instructional time to express their views. This activity was not organized, sponsored or endorsed by Bowling Green City Schools,” the statement said.
The statement also said the district’s response was guided by a board policy which states that students shouldn’t be disturbed of their rights to assemble peacefully and express ideas or opinions in a private or public manner.
“The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority. School administrators ensured appropriate supervision and safety measures were in place,” Bowling Green High School said.
