Since hiring Mike and Jan Wilcox Football Head Coach Eddie George, Bowling Green State University (BGSU) Police Department anticipates adjustments to security will be necessary.
Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police Michael Campbell says while security may increase, he does not anticipate it impacting the student experience.
“From a student perspective, I don’t think you’ll experience a whole lot [of changes],” Campbell said.
This year Doyt L. Perry Stadium opened a new student gate near the student section, providing convenient entry for attending students.
Sophomore aviation major, Luke Pederson, said he “didn’t notice much difference in security” since Coach George’s arrival.
However, Pederson did enjoy the new gate, adding, “There weren’t really lines to get in even though the place was crowded.”
Though security at the Doyt may appear unchanged, Coach George’s star status has certainly attracted additional attention.
“People recognize who [George] is and hope for an opportunity to introduce themselves,” Campbell said.
That attention expands beyond the walls of The Doyt, he noted and community-wide concerns also come into account.
Security, Campbell says, is not a one-size-fits-all approach, describing it as “a continual evaluation.”
Different individuals or events that campus police focus on often require different procedures. While that applies to Coach George and the football team, Campbell asserts that it is applicable to everything they do on campus.
Ultimately, Campbell says, the goal is to “make sure we’re creating a safe environment for all.”
