The U.S. Army Cadet Command administered a rebalance and optimization of the Senior ROTC program, inactivating the 1st Brigade headquarters at Fort Knox and reclassifying and merging select ROTC units around the country.
Ian Ives, the Media Relations Chief of the U.S. Army Cadet Command, declined the request to interview, but released a statement indicating Bowling Green State University (BGSU) cadets will not see an impact.
“Cadets will not see any impacts to their scholarships, stipends, graduation timelines or progression toward achieving an Army commission,” the release stated.
The University of Toledo (UToledo) program has been reclassified as an extension unit, which, according to the Army’s website, means it “will retain cadre members on their campus and Cadets will continue receiving training and education there, but the program will merge administrative and logistical support with a retained host unit.”
Neither Ives, BGSU nor UToledo would confirm that UToledo’s administrative and logistical support will come from BGSU.
According to the Army website, these changes will start in the summer of 2026, with a goal to “optimize resources, improve operational effectiveness,” to assist with the goal of recruiting, training and commissioning officers.
These changes are important for the university’s program, as BGSU has been named the No. 1 university in the Midwest for veterans and active military students, according to Military Times.
Ives’ statement said the move “follows a comprehensive review and consideration of feedback from community leaders and key stakeholders.”
