After the night before, when the Minnesota Mavericks (4-2-4, 1-1-2) won in a shootout, tonight the opposite happens, with BGSU hockey (2-3-3, 2-1-3) coming out on top. Senior forward Bret Pfoh scores the shootout winner, 1-0, after a two-goal performance.
The opening frame between Bowling Green and Minnesota State was a tight defensive battle marked by strong goaltending and several special teams opportunities. The Falcons controlled the face off circle early, winning draws and generating multiple scoring chances from Noah Morneau, Ben Doran and Jaden Grant, but MSU goalie Alex Tracy stood tall to keep BGSU off the board.
The Mavericks had two power play opportunities in the period after Bowling Green penalties to Breck McKinley and Dalton Norris. Still, BGSU goaltender Jacob Steinman turned away several dangerous looks to keep it scoreless at the end of the first period.
The second period was a fast-paced, back-and-forth battle with both Bowling Green and Minnesota State scoring goals. The Mavericks got the scoring started first with Luigi Benincasa at 6:52.
However, BGSU soon capitalized on an opportunity when Pfoh scored on the power play at 12:29, assisted by Quinn Emerson and Ben Doran, evening the score at 1-1. Both teams had chances on the power play during this period, but both goaltenders held strong to keep the score locked at one going into the third period.
The third period was a tense, defensive battle, starting with the Mavericks being aggressive and creating several quality scoring chances early on Steinman, but Bowling Green responded with a few opportunities of their own, including shots from Pfoh and Morneau.
However, Minnesota State’s defense blocked several attempts. This period featured aggressive forechecking, but neither team could capitalize, leading to overtime.
Similar results would happen in the five-minute overtime sessions, but goaltender Steinman stayed strong with an impressive performance tonight, leading to this game being decided in a shootout, with the Falcons coming up with a big victory.
Bowling Green will return home to the Slater Family Ice Arena next weekend to take on Ferris State Bulldogs, starting on Friday, Nov. 14.
