With April being National Fair Housing Month, the city of Bowling Green encourages community members to know their rights protected by the law and to join in reaffirming a commitment to fair housing for all.
The Fair Housing Act was signed into law April 11, 1968, a week after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. This act prohibits all discrimination in the sale, rental and financing of housing based on race, color, religion, national origin, sex, familial status or disability
According to a recent press release from the city, the city of Bowling Green defines discrimination as any act, policy or practice that, regardless of intent, has the effect of subjecting any person to differential treatment as a result of that person’s actual or perceived, race, ethnicity, color, religion, national origin, immigration status, gender, gender expression, gender identity, sex, pregnancy, age, sexual orientation, creed, ancestry, disability, military status, veteran status, marital status, family status, physical characteristics, HIV status, source of income or genetic information.
If you or someone you know has questions or believe your rights have been violated, contact the Community Development Department by phone at 419-354-6203 or by email at [email protected].
