Governor Mike Dewine named Andy Wilson the interim attorney general for Ohio following the resignation from Dave Yost effective June 7. Yost has served as Ohio’s attorney general since 2019, leaving to join the private sector. Wilson will assume the position for the remainder of Yost’s term through Jan. 11, 2027.
Wilson was the director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety and, prior to that, a Clark County Prosecutor. A new attorney general will be determined in November’s election.
Major-party options in the upcoming general election include Republican state auditor Keith Faber and Upper Arlington Councilman John Kulewicz, the Democratic nominee.
DeWine served as attorney general from 2011-2019, serving the maximum amount of terms allowed. According to press release from the governor’s office, DeWine attributed his decision to prior experience.
“I know from experience how important the office of the Ohio Attorney General is. I have great confidence that Andy Wilson will do a great job as the attorney general for the state of Ohio. I base this on watching him as a former Clark County prosecuting attorney and working with him on a daily basis as the director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety,” DeWine said.
Wilson holds an undergraduate degree in political science from Wright State University and earned his law degrees from the University of Dayton School of Law.
Wilson served the state of Ohio in various roles including the National Guard, prosecutor in Clark County and DeWine’s senior advisor for criminal justice policy. Gov. DeWine would later appoint Wilson as Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety, a position he’s held since 2022.
According to the press release from his office, DeWine stated he will announce the interim replacement for Andy Wilson’s role as Director of the Ohio Department of Public Safety at a later date.
