Stress can come from many angles when students are in college. They can struggle with financial problems, work, school, relationship difficulties and major life changes. As for coping with stress, the University has several resources to the rescue.
One resource is the Student Recreation Center. Fitness Student Supervisor Adrienne Ansel gave some advice about exercising and eating healthy.
“Our full facility is open to all students if you are a full-time student,” Ansel said. “… We have tons of different opportunities and programs for students to get involved in. We have fitness programs, fitness classes, training, personal training, tons of yoga classes – things like that so students can still stay active and still enjoy being active and being involved on campus too.”
Ansel also mentioned things she does to personally relieve stress.
“I teach group fitness classes and I really enjoy that,” she said. “After a long day, going and teaching and getting to help other people. I believe it really helps me de-stress – and also personal training – and I just work out here.”
Senior digital arts major Nathan Buswell does things to relive some of the stress that he has as well.
“I sit back, listen to some music and not think about anything. Just relax and try not to think about what’s stressing you out,” he said.
The University also offers the Counseling Center which is a resource for students who feel overwhelmed or need help dealing with stress. The center offers many types of counseling for a plethora of issues students may be having. Services are free for enrolled BG students. The location and hours can be found at https://www.bgsu.edu/counseling-center.html
A report at the website HelpGuide.org, which collaborates with Harvard Health Publications, can also be a resource for stressed out students since it lists some common causes of stress. The online guide reported that having a pessimistic attitude, unrealistic expectations or lacking flexibility can worsen stress for students. College breeds all of these, so stress could come at you from all angles.
Connecting to others, using your commonsense and learning to eat a healthy diet are all ways to relieve stress, according to the website.
By learning how to manage stress with these resources, the college experience for Falcons could become a smoother ride.
