Bowling Green State University students have a new research database to use after the university library unveiled an upgraded software system.
The library launched the system in early June and is intended to be an improved research tool for university staff and students.
“The new Library Search tool has been in development for over seven years with user experience being the top priority,” said Beth Fridrick, the university’s collection and electronic resources librarian. “It offers a single streamlined search for books, scholarly articles [and] videos.
Part of the years-long process to officially bring the software to BGSU included nearly a dozen rounds of testing with the university community, including students, professors and researchers.
“Every customization was made with the goal of making research easier, more intuitive and more effective for our campus community. Behind the scenes, the library system includes significant upgrades that will help our library staff work more efficiently,” Fridrick said.
The new system, built using the Alma-Primo Library Services Platform, integrates with OhioLINK, the statewide library system for Ohio colleges.
What does this mean for students?
The new system allows for faster searching by including both electronic and print materials like books, articles, photographs and other media all in one location. Likewise, the university redesigned the library’s website to make it easier to access the database on mobile devices.
In addition, the system allows library staff to manage checkouts and holds in a better way.
How to use the new system
The new system is available for the BGSU community to explore through their MyBGSU account.
However, if you need help, the library is offering several ways to familiarize yourself with the program.
Fridrick said the library will be hosting virtual and in-person training sessions through the upcoming fall semester. She also provided an online user guide.
Since the system is brand new to everyone, the library wants to hear what you have to say.
“Please use the new Library Search and give us feedback,” said Fridrick. “The library is the academic heart of campus and we’re grateful for the continued support we’ve received from the BGSU community.”
