BGSU football held its weekly press conference before their matchup against Central Michigan on Monday afternoon, with Mike and Jan Wilcox Head Football Coach Eddie George, junior linebacker Gideon Lampron and senior wide receiver RJ Garcia II.
Here are the Falcon Four takeaways from the media availability:
The Falcons are moving on from the Toledo win
George acknowledged that the Battle of I-75 win was huge for both the team and the community.
However, he also put an emphasis on moving on and staying focused going forward.
“It was 45 minutes ago. We had that discussion yesterday. It’s a great win, a great win for our community. It’s a big rivalry that our school takes very seriously and our community takes very seriously, but we still have the meat of our schedule we have to play,” George said. “In the Mid-American Conference (MAC), every week is tough, and we’ve got another opponent we have to get ready for here.”
Bowling Green got outplayed by Toledo on paper
The Falcons pulled off the biggest upset in program history on Saturday, defeating Toledo 28-23 after trailing by 21 points.
However, George noted that the Orange and Brown got outplayed. He also stressed that the team needs to continue to improve week-to-week.
“We’ve got to get better. We were very fortunate to walk away with a victory,” George said. “But on paper, we got outplayed, and we’ve got to figure out ways where we can get better on all three phases.”
No clarity on the quarterback situation
There was no update on the starting quarterback situation.
George was asked and responded with his evaluation of redshirt freshman Lucian Anderson III.
“Lucian has to get better. First start, understand the situation. It wasn’t a game plan where we could unfold our entire deal. We had to really play to his strengths, and try to limit the amount of mistakes that could’ve been made just to keep his confidence and to keep everything going, and he did a phenomenal job,” George said. “What we didn’t do well was support him in terms of an efficient run game.”
George also gave an update on graduate student quarterback Drew Pyne.
“Drew is day-to-day still. We’re not sure or clear on his status, but over the next couple of days, we’ll find out and we’ll know,” George said.
The update is notable, as George said Pyne was “week-to-week” in the press conference after the Toledo win.
Central Michigan will be another test for Bowling Green
Bowling Green’s second-half schedule is easier on paper than their first six games.
However, this does not mean every win is guaranteed.
George has numerous compliments for Central Michigan, the team’s upcoming opponent.
Eddie: “Formidable opponent. They’re very tough, well-coached…So, they’re going to come in very disciplined. This is a team that you’ve got to be mindful of,” George said.
But George once again reiterated that anything can happen in the MAC.
“Ohio, that we played two weeks ago, they beat us, and then they lost to Ball State the following week. So, on any given Saturday, somebody can be beat,” George said. “That’s what you have to be prepared for.”
