BGSU football’s quarterback situation is as turbulent as any in the country, with the Falcons down to their fourth-string quarterback.
Graduate student quarterback Drew Pyne started the first five games of the season before suffering an injury in the loss to Ohio on Sept. 27 that has kept him out since.
Meanwhile, his backup, sophomore quarterback Lucian Anderson III, started the next two games. However, he suffered a knee injury late in the loss to Central Michigan on Oct. 18.
With Pyne and Anderson sidelined, graduate student quarterback Baron May got his first start on Saturday against Kent State.
May went 12-for-22 for 142 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 32 yards and another score. But he suffered a leg injury late in the game that forced him to be carted off the field as the Falcons blew an 18-point lead, falling to the Golden Flashes, 24-21.
“As you can see, Baron May played his ass off, and it just ended bad for him; I hope he gets better,” junior cornerback MJ Cannon said postgame. “He was down in the spirits because he knew he played hard, he did everything he could for this team, and that’s all I could ask for as a teammate.”
With May out of the game, redshirt freshman Hunter Najm took his spot under center for BGSU, becoming the fourth quarterback and fifth different player to attempt a pass for Bowling Green this season.
“It’s testing our depth, no question. Finding out what guys can do. We’re down to our fourth-string quarterback; we’re banged up,” Mike and Jan Wilcox Head Football Coach Eddie George said. “This is, unfortunately, the casualties of war. It’s a next-man-up mentality. It’s part of the game of football.”
Quarterback play has been a weak point for Bowling Green this season.
BG’s signal callers have combined to complete just 61.8% of their passes for just 165 yards per game, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in eight games this year.
The quarterback situation for Bowling Green is also as unclear as ever.
Although Pyne did not see any action against KSU, he was dressed for the first time since getting injured.
“Hopefully, Drew will be back next week,” George said.
Meanwhile, Anderson did not suit up and featured a noticeable limp on the field pregame.
“Lucian is still going to be week-to-week. We’ll see what’s going on with his knee,” George said.
Regardless of who is throwing the pigskin for the Orange and Brown, the team will rally behind them as they look to find success in the final four games of the season.
“I think whoever steps up to the plate is put there for a reason,” Cannon said.

The BG QB and Browns QB carnival share more than team colors.both teams have now cycled through four QBs, with minimal success.
As a long time season ticket holder I’ve got to say I’ve never gone through such extremes , from the HIGH of the big win vs ——. To blowing a big lead vs KSU…
Now, seeing some of the key names going into the portal, I’m hoping my alma mater can somehow retain some of these kids. If not then guess there’s no choice but to hit portal hard like last year. Frankly, I’m concerned about the future of college football and sports overall. Especially I see the “group of five” schools being treated like “ farm teams “ for the big 4. I don’t blame the kids for following the money, but don’t think it’s healthy for college sports.
