Every third Thursday of the month, Howard’s Club H in downtown Bowling Green transforms into more than just a music venue and bar, but a place for the community to find free items and connect with others. Hosted by the Bowling Green Democratic Socialists of America (BG DSA), the Bowling Green Free Store offers clothing, packaged foods, toiletries, books, toys and household items at no cost to those who are in need.
The free store began when Jacob Gibson, a member of BG DSA and a group of friends, wanted to do something positive for the Bowling Green community.
“We just wanted to find a way for everyone to save some money and help each other out,” Gibson said. “We reached out around town to see who wanted to donate or volunteer and it all came together from there.”
Gibson, one of the founding members, stored donations in his own storage unit when the project was first getting off the ground. They eventually connected with Howard’s to host the monthly event, saying that the location just made sense for both convenience and comfort.
“Howard’s is a space a lot of us were familiar with,” Gibson said. “It’s accessible, has plenty of room and people feel comfortable showing up. It’s a bar for all ages and wheelchair accessible, so everyone can be included.”
Since it launched in April, the response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.
“From the very first event, people showed up to donate and volunteer,” Gibson said. “We’ve never had to worry about having enough donations. It’s been amazing to see that level of support.”
Donations to the free store come from community members and there’s always a need for certain items.
“We’re always looking for toiletries and hygiene products,” Gibson said. “Feminine hygiene items are especially important. As the weather gets colder, warmer clothes become more needed too.”
Over time, donations have expanded to include a wide range of items. From clothes and books to small appliances, board games and home decor. BG DSA hopes to have plans for a winter coat drive in the coming months in order to meet those seasonal needs.
Anyone is welcome to attend or donate to the free store.
“It’s open to everyone in the community,” Gibson said. “As long as you’re respectful, you’re welcome here. Everyone needs a little help sometimes.”
The next BG Free Store will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 6 to 10 p.m. at Howard’s Club H, located at 210 Main Street. Anyone interested in donating, volunteering or learning more can reach out to Jacob Gibson directly at 440-296-6405 or visit the BG DSA Instagram page, @bowlinggreendsa, for updates and event information.
