For many Bowling Green State University (BGSU) students, Halloween is a night to dress up in costumes and celebrate. BGSU’s Community of Care released a “Halloween safe celebration guide,” with the following ten tips for students to remember while celebrating:
- Remember to make smart decisions.
- Always be alert and aware of your surroundings and the activities around you.
- Travel in well-lit, well-traveled areas with friends or others if possible and keep your hands free, not overloaded.
- Alcohol impairs judgment, so if you choose to drink, know your limits. The Code of Student Conduct and Ohio law prohibit underage possession and consumption of alcohol, as well as misconduct under the influence.
- Don’t Stall, Make the Call! Get help if you see someone in need. Ask for help if you are in need. Remember, the Code of Student Conduct permits amnesty for students seeking medical assistance for themselves or others.
- The Campus Shuttle Service provides safe options for on-campus transportation and the Campus Escort Service can assist with traveling to and from any location on campus.
- Be mindful of any part of your costume that could be construed as a weapon.
- Consider the impact costumes can have because some Halloween costumes reinforce stereotypes of particular races, genders, mental health diagnoses, cultures or religions. Regardless of intent, these costumes can perpetuate negative stereotypes, causing harm and offense to some members of our BGSU community.
- What happens in Bowling Green… could stay on social media forever. So, ask yourself, “Would I want my future employer to see these posts?”
- If there is an emergency (someone’s health, safety and/or property is at risk), please call 911.
The university also recommends if students have an incident or concern they would like to report, they can use the “report it” button in the BGSU mobile app.
