BGSU men’s basketball (2-0) took on the Bethany College Bison (0-0) Thursday night at the Stroh Center. This game was an exhibition match for the Bison, but counted as a regular-season game for the Falcons. Bowling Green dominated the entirety of the game, with a final score of 120-65.
Bowling Green made history in tonight’s matchup with a total of 27 steals. This breaks the program record of steals in a single game, which was previously set at 22.
“We were competitive. We talked, we were aggressive. We were out there having fun at defense,” said senior guard Javontae Campbell at the post-game press conference.
The first points for the Orange and Brown were a jumper by senior forward Troy Glover II, which put him at 1,000 career points.
“He’s a spectacular kid. He plays hard, tries to do the right thing, and he’s coachable. The guys love him. He’s a real weapon for us,” said head coach Todd Simon.
Early in the first half, the game was tight. BGSU found themselves behind schedule and trailing by a few points throughout the early minutes. The Bisons had been very efficient in hitting three-pointers, going 5-for-9, whereas Bowling Green was 0-for-4.
The Falcons finally took the lead off a layup by senior guard Javontae Campbell, altering the score to 23-21.
Bowling Green finished the first half by going on a 17-5 run and had a commanding lead of 56-34. Their defense played exceptionally well, forcing 19 turnovers, 14 of which were steals.
Campbell led the team in points at the half, with 16. He also had four steals in 12 minutes on the floor.
“He’s one of our hardest workers. He shot it extremely well back in the summer,” said Simon after the game. “He’s able to make more passes, and I think the team complements him.”
The Orange and Brown opened up the second half, continuing their run, scoring 18 unanswered points. The offense came alive late in the half, with the team scoring 64 total points, 40 of those being off the bench.
“Our bench is electric 24/7. That’s what makes the five of us out there play better. We all want to see each other score,” Campbell said postgame.
The game finished with the Falcons going on a 12-5 run and putting up a dominating score of 120-65. This marks the fifth time in the team’s history that they have broken 120 points.
Bowling Green now looks ahead to the Le Moyne Dolphins. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. on Sunday at the Stroh Center for BG’s third home game in a row.
