BGSU women’s basketball (1-3) underwent its second loss to the Marquette Golden Eagles (3-1) during their two games played in Wisconsin, losing 71-55 at the Al McGuire Center on Friday night.
“We’re going to make some adjustments,” said assistant coach Maggie Lucas. “It’s just, you know, trying to find our rhythm right a little bit right now. We’ll get it going, but you know, make some adjustments, and get this right.”
The two schools began the game suffocating each other defensively, with Marquette leading Bowling Green 6-3 with five minutes left in the first quarter. BG could not mount a scoring run, especially after shooting 8% from the floor in the early stages of the game.
Senior guard Lee Volker produced eight points in the first quarter, led both teams in scoring, as Marquette ended the first quarter on top, 15-8.
Despite the Orange and Brown losing by seven entering the second quarter, head coach Fred Chmiel went to his whiteboard and made immediate changes. Senior guard Emily Siesel started the second quarter, knocking down two crucial triples to boost the Falcons within one point of Marquette, pushing the score to 15-14.
Junior guard Paige Kohler scored her first points of the match with two minutes left in the first half, keeping Bowling Green within striking distance, but still down by a score of 25-24.
Although the Falcons struggled to score in the first quarter, as a team, they were much more efficient after scoring 19 points in the second quarter. Junior guard Johnea Donahue and senior guard Kaia Woods each scored seven points in the first half, pushing BGSU within two at halftime, 29-27.
Donahue’s offensive momentum continued as she entered the third quarter, piling four early points for Bowling Green. However, BG still trailed by five, losing 36-31 to the Golden Eagles.
Volker’s ongoing offensive attack persisted throughout the third, after she increased her point total to 16, boosting Marquette’s advantage to 51-39, concluding the third quarter. On top of that, junior guard Halle Vice manufactured a game-leading 18 points entering the fourth quarter.
Volker and Vice’s offensive command intensified throughout the fourth quarter as the Golden Eagles pulled away by twenty, as Marquette led 63-43. From that point on, Marquette’s defense continued to prevent the Falcons from scoring.
The Orange and Brown finished the game shooting 19-60 from the floor, and a whopping 21% from behind the three-point line, which contributed to BG falling to the Golden Eagles by a final of 71-55.
Despite another fantastic performance from Donahue, who finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, and three assists in 26 minutes of action, the Falcons’ supporting cast was far from recognizable. Kohler struggled mightily shooting the basketball tonight. She compiled seven points after shooting 18% from the field, and while making only one triple out of eight attempts.
The Orange and Brown will now set their sights on their next road trip to Alaska, as they will battle UC Irvine next Friday at 9:15 p.m.
Falcon Media Sports Network will have full coverage of the game on bgfalconmedia.com.
