BGSU football (4-8, 2-6 MAC) ended its regular season with a victory over the Massachusetts Minutemen (0-12, 0-8 MAC) on the road, 45-14. Ending a five-game losing streak that had stretched since their Oct. 11 win against Toledo.
While the Falcons were able to put on a show on offense, scoring a season high 45 points, the defense also displayed another great showing from junior linebacker Gideon Lampron. Throughout all four quarters, Lampron would lead the team with 10 total tackles, with six of them being solo, two tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.
“Once I see the ball coming, I just get happy,” Lampron said, postgame. “There’s no better feeling than being able to smack someone.”
The performance caps off a tremendous first year for the former Dayton Flyer. Lampron ends the year off with 109 total tackles, 59 solo tackles, 50 assisted stops, and two and a half sacks. Currently, the only player in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) has reached those numbers.
Despite the impressive stat line, the junior attributes the success to the rest of the defense stepping up through tough times, especially with losing fellow sophomore linebacker Dorian Pringle going down with an injury early in the season.
“One thing throughout the entire season is that we look at ourselves critically,” Lampron said, smiling. “I’m so proud of every one of us, with Dorian going down early in the year, seeing the younger cats stepping up puts a smile on my face.”
Mike and Jan Wilcox Head Football Coach Eddie George was also pleased with how Lampron was able to make the most out of a tough situation with losing Pringle.
“Incredible, just taking on that role of being the ‘mike’ and making the calls,” George said. “It had to take some time for him to get used to everything; he’s going to continue to grow with this defense.
As the season now comes to a close, Lampron and the rest of the group look at ending with a win heading into the off-season as a much-needed momentum boost to prepare for 2026.
“Ending on a win, it brings a lot,” Lampron said. “Ending with that win and taking it into off-season workouts, it’ll just build into next season.”
George also agreed with the same mentality.
“It’s those building blocks,” George said. “Winter is coming; we have a lot of work to do this off-season.”
