After a tumultuous final week in the college football season for the Mid-American Conference (MAC), the title game in Detroit, Michigan, finally has its two programs that will go head-to-head for the conference championship.
This year’s title game matchup will feature a rematch from the regular season, as the Western Michigan Broncos (8-4, 7-1) will face off against the Miami RedHawks (7-5, 6-2).
Miami
For the third straight season, Chuck Martin and the RedHawks find themselves back in Detroit and are looking for their second title in three seasons.
The journey began after a 0-3 start to the season, but Martin and his group rallied through October and November to get themselves in their third straight title game appearance. The first time since both Bowling Green and Northern Illinois from 2013-2015.
For Martin, it’s a time that he and the roster look forward to, but one that has to have the team remain focused against a team that they had lost to back on Oct. 25, 26-17.
“We’re thankful to play them again,” Martin said. “They had us on the ropes; I don’t expect them to change anything. They run the ball well offensively.”
Western Michigan
Western Michigan is looking for its first conference championship since 2016, which is also the last time that the program made an appearance in said event.
Led by head coach Lance Taylor, who recently won MAC coach of the year honors, the Broncos will look to continue their strong season by maintaining their ‘1-0’ mentality.
“They practice that every single week,” Taylor said. “We’ve talked about that ever since training camp. Our job is to go ‘1-0’, we don’t have two games left, we have one game.”
History
For both programs, it’ll be the 65th meeting between the Broncos and RedHawks, with Miami leading in the all-time series at 39-24-1, with Miami winning the two previous matchups.
