BGSU women’s basketball (8-6, 1-2 MAC) will be hosted by Northern Illinois (3-11, 1-2 MAC) on Saturday, Jan. 10th, at 2 p.m., in the Convocation Center.
Falcon Media Sports Network’s Lucas Kleimeyer will call the game and be joined in-studio by Dan Ridenour on WBGU 88.1 FM.
Bowling Green
The Orange and Brown have lost their past two Mid-American Conference (MAC) games, with the most recent defeat being a 56-68 loss to Central Michigan. BG will look to make a complete turnaround on the offensive end.
A crucial factor in the low-scoring affair was BG’s inability to shoot from range. They were one of 16 from three-point range. Bowling Green has only shot 26.9% from three this season. They have the second-lowest percentage in the MAC while attempting the second-most threes in the conference.
On the other side of that contest, senior forward Kendal Moxey had a career day. She finished with a double-double, scoring 16 points and 15 rebounds, leading the team in both categories.
The only other Falcon in double-digits was junior guard Paige Kohler, as she totaled 11. However, those points came on an inefficient five of 18 shooting.
Kohler wasn’t the only player struggling, as the Falcons shot 29% as a team in the outing. BGSU also had a collective 20 turnovers, six of which were assigned to sophomore guard Johnea Donahue.
Northern Illinois
The Huskies have struggled up until this point in the season, but they are coming off a MAC road victory over Buffalo.
NIU is led by first-year head coach Jacey Brooks, who got a win against her former Buffalo Bulls team for just the third win of the season. Brooks also has some Orange and Brown ties, spending 2013-2018 as an assistant coach with the Falcons.
Freshman guard Emilie Sorensen led the way with her remarkable 20 points on five of six shooting. She made four three-pointers along with a perfect six free throws. Sorensen currently averages 8.1 points per game, which is third on NIU’s roster.
Alongside Sorensen, junior forward Nevaeh Wingate tallied 15 points and seven rebounds. It isn’t too much of a surprise, as Wingate leads the Huskies with 12.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
Another key piece of the Huskies’ scoring is graduate student guard Nadechka Laccen. She averages 11.6 points per game and has started nine of her ten appearances.
To round out the offensive attack, senior guard Maria Serracanta leads the team with 3 assists per outing, along with 5.5 points per game. Nobody else on the roster has more than 1.7 assists on average.
FALCON FOUR PLAYERS TO WATCH
Paige Kohler (Bowling Green — No. 10, junior guard)
Kohler has been sporadic in the field in the first half of the season. A road conference game is the perfect time to bounce back and truly lead the Falcons to victory.
Kendal Moxey (Bowling Green — No. 33, senior forward)
Moxey certainly made a case for more minutes after her last outing. Whether she starts or comes off the bench in this one, she definitely can hound rebounds and be a mismatch for defenders.
Emilie Sorensen (Northern Illinois — No. 14, freshman guard)
Sorensen is coming off her career high and is the best shooting threat for NIU. She will be a problem to guard on the perimeter for the whole contest.
Nevaeh Wingate (Northern Illinois — No. 8, junior forward)
Wingate has led NIU in scoring this season and will face a BG squad that has fouled an extensive amount in the paint. She could earn herself plenty of free throws and post opportunities.
