Following a close 51-49 loss to the Miami RedHawks on Saturday. BGSU women’s basketball (10-7, 3-3 MAC) hosts the Ohio Bobcats (11-5, 5-1 MAC) on Wednesday night in the Stroh Center, at 7 p.m.
Falcon Media Sports Network’s Adam Duffin and Dan Ridenour will call the game on WBGU 88.1 FM.
Bowling Green
The Orange and Brown will attempt to get back on track after a heartbreaking 51-49 loss against the Miami RedHawks on Saturday. In that home loss, BG turned the ball over 28 times and had crucial mistakes in crunch time.
In the agony of defeat, there were some bright spots for the Falcons. Sophomore forward Lauren Gerken posted her second consecutive double-digit scoring performance with 11 points and snagged six steals.
Alongside Gerken, sophomore guard Johnea Donahue also tallied 11 points and four steals, keeping pace with her season averages.
Every starter had at least two turnovers against Miami, and Donahue led the way with six turnovers. She was trailed closely by junior guard Paige Kohler with five.
Interestingly enough, BG shot 41 percent from the field and from three-point range. Both those numbers are well above their season averages.
The Falcons will look to get back to over .500 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.
Ohio
In their most recent game, the Bobcats narrowly beat NIU 66-62 to get back into the win column.
It was the usual suspect that led Ohio in scoring, as junior guard Bailey Tabeling scored 15 points. She leads the team with 13.5 points per game this season, and leads the Bobcats in assists and steals.
Redshirt sophomore guard Bella Ranallo also joined the scoring party with her 12 points. She averages 11.4 points, second most on the roster.
The most shocking performance against NIU was freshman guard ReRe Jennings’ 14 points off the bench. Jennings is the tenth leading scorer for OU, and achieved her career-high in minutes in the last game, with 19.
A key note of the Bobcats’ offensive attack is their free-throw shooting. As they are shooting at a 64.7 percent rate, which ranks 3rd-lowest in the MAC.
Another aspect of their attack is their adaptation to the three-point barrage in this new era of basketball. Ohio is sixth in the conference in three-point percentage, but they make the most in the MAC.
Head coach Bob Boldon has exercised this philosophy for most of his tenure, and BG will have to tightly defend on the perimeter.
The Bobcats look to avenge their home loss to the Falcons last year.
FALCON FOUR PLAYERS TO WATCH
Lauren Gerken (Bowling Green — No. 22, sophomore forward)
Gerken has started to hit her outside shots in the past two games. If she can continue her scoring, it opens up a new realm for BG’s offense to score at a higher rate.
Johnea Donahue (Bowling Green — No. 3, sophomore guard)
Donahue is one of the top stealers in the nation and leads the MAC. With the Bobcats’ offense focused on the perimeter, she has the opportunity to get into passing lanes and push the ball in transition.
Bailey Tabeling (Ohio — No. 21, junior guard)
Tabeling has been one of the top scorers in the MAC this season and provides versatility at 5-foot-ten. If she can protect the ball against BG’s defense, she can jolt the offense into rhythm.
ReRe Jennings (Ohio — No. 2, freshman guard)
Jennings took full advantage of her increased playing time versus NIU. Just like Tabeling, she provides great versatility for Ohio’s offense and can be a problem for BG defenders off the bench.
