The upcoming Falcon Career Showcase will bring employers to Bowling Green State University (BGSU), offering students an opportunity to explore career options and prepare for life after graduation.
The Falcon Career Showcase is on Feb. 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lenhart Grand Ballroom in the Bowen-Thompson Student Union (BTSU).
The showcase is a one-day event offering an opportunity for students and alumni to explore different range of career paths.
The showcase welcomes students from all majors and industries. Students can download the Career Fair Plus app, a live list of employers, and a floor map of the event to help plan their time.
“We encourage students who might think a career fair isn’t for them to come because we have industries and employers and recruiters who are seeking a wide range of majors, of opportunities within their industries and their companies,” said Beth Miller, an associate director for career design. “It’s a great time, especially if you are with a lot of intent, you’re looking for an internship, co-op or you’re looking for that job.”
The Kuhlin Career Hub has many resources for students, including coaches, to help figure out what jobs students want and more.
“One, obviously, we have our coaching services. So we have a team of six coaches who are across campus. We really recommend at least starting there to have that conversation because it does take a strategy to figure out the role that you’re seeking,” Miller said. “In addition to that, we do have an AI tool that’s free to all students VMAC…if you don’t even have a resume, it has a build feature. It also has a mock interview module.”
The BTSU houses the Kuhlin Career Hub on the second floor, Suite 225, which offers services throughout the week.
“Within this space, we do have a free photo booth to update or get a headshot if they do not have one. That’s available to students from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Our coaches are in satellite offices so they are throughout the campus,” Miller said.
Students can prepare to get a job after graduation by being prepared before their last year and networking with others.
“So, how they [students] can prepare to find a job is actually way before the last year of their academic year. Finding a job is really about considering the role or roles that you’re focused on, and that really comes from a lot of work within the career readiness space,” Miller said.” Things like engaging with industry professionals, learning about different paths through things like informational interviews and job shadowing. Going to networking events here on campus, even coming to the career fairs.”
The Kuhlin Career Hub wants everyone at BGSU to succeed, and a student’s first job isn’t their last.
“Here at BG, everyone that you engage with on a professional level is here to support students in their pursuit of a career path for that first job out of college because it’s not your last job, it’s your first job,” Miller said.
