BGSU women’s basketball (12-11, 4-7) eyes another pivotal Mid-American Conference (MAC) game against the Buffalo Bulls (2-21, 0-11) on Tuesday night.
Falcon Media Sports Network’s Adam Duffin and Dawson Pelter will be broadcasting the matchup, with the game beginning at 7 p.m. inside the Stroh Center on WBGU 88.1 FM.
Matchup History
The Falcons and the Bulls games historically have been back and forth, with neither team dominating the series between the two. Bowling Green has only won 28 of the 55 total meetings between the two schools.
Having said that, the last time the Orange and Brown met with Buffalo occurred during last year’s MAC Tournament at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. The Bulls defeated BG in a tightly contested game, with Buffalo succeeding by a score of 65-63.
To make matters worse, the Bulls have doomed Bowling Green during the past two seasons in the MAC Tournament, also defeating BGSU during the 2023-24 campaign, winning 70-64 at Rocket Arena.
Bowling Green
The Falcons are fresh off their victory over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers this past Saturday afternoon, after winning 93-82 in one of their best overall offensive shooting performances of the season. As a team, they shot an impressive 59% from the floor, which marks their highest shooting percentage of the season.
BG’s head coach Fred Chmiel mixed up his starting five against Coastal Carolina after starting senior forward Kendal Moxey, sophomore guard Johnea Donahue, junior guard Paige Kohler, junior guard Jasmine Fearne and senior guard Kaia Woods.
With Bowling Green’s best shooting performance in mind, the Orange and Brown had a total of five players reach double figures in scoring. Both Kohler, Donahue and Woods, who collectively scored in double digits, but sophomore forward Lauren Gerken and junior forward Joniyah Bland-Fitzpatrick also had dynamic afternoons on offense, combining for 39 points off the bench.
Other than BGSU’s shooting efforts, as a unit, they did eclipse 29 total turnovers on offense. It’s a stat in which the Falcons have cleaned up more recently, turning the ball over a combined 30 times during their last two outings.
Buffalo
The Bulls are in the midst of a 15-game losing streak, which has contributed to their winless conference record, while also being the lowest seed in the MAC. Buffalo’s most recent loss came this past Saturday to the UL Monroe WarHawks, losing 73-64.
Buffalo has been hampered by an extremely poor shooting season, averaging 59 points per contest, while their opponents are scoring nearly 73 points against Buffalo this year, resulting in a -14 scoring margin.
Despite losing by nine points to the Warhawks during their last matchup, Buffalo did manage to produce a 42% field goal percentage on the day, which exceeds their averages from the floor. Buffalo is currently shooting on average, 37.2% from the hardwood this year.
Redshirt freshman guard Aniya Rowe and freshman forward Meg Lucas led Buffalo in scoring, accounting for 32 of the Bulls’ 64 points against the WarHawks.
Falcon Four Players To Watch
Joniah Bland-Fitzpatrick (Bowling Green No. 8 junior guard)
Lauren Gerken (Bowling Green No. 22 sophomore forward)
Similar to Bland-Fitzpatrick, Gerken played an important role off the bench, scoring 18 points and grabbing six rebounds. After a slow start to the season, Gerken has begun to seize confidence in her game, now averaging the third-most points per game on the Falcons’ roster, scoring 8.8 points per game.
Aniya Rowe (Buffalo Bulls No. 7 redshirt freshman guard)
As a freshman, Rowe leads Buffalo with the most points scored per game, averaging 13.2 points, in addition to 4.3 rebounds per outing. The Falcons will need to be creative in finding ways to slow Rowe down on the offensive end to limit her impact offensively.
Meg Lucas (Buffalo Bulls No. 24 freshman forward)
Lucas is another young difference-maker for the Bulls’ offense, nearly averaging a double-double, averaging the second-most points per game on the Buffalo offense with 9.1 points a game and a team-high 9.8 rebounds a game. BG’s bigs will need to keep Lucas in check in the paint to prevent second-chance opportunities and opportunities in the paint, not to mention around the perimeter as well.
