BGSU women’s basketball(14-12, 6-8) defeats the Western Michigan Broncos (7-16, 3-9) with a final score of 67-63. Bowling Green’s sophomore guard Johnea Donahue spearheaded the Falcons during the late stages of the game and bolstered them to victory.
“She’s a winner,” said head coach Fred Chmiel. “She’s a winner, and that was a winning play. A winning stop, steal, and then the nerves of steel, ice cold to make those free throws down the stretch, 7-7 from the free throw line.”
Donahue finished tonight’s game scoring 14 points, including six rebounds, six steals, and one of those steals coming in the last minute of the game to secure the Orange and Brown’s win.
Today, BG shot 17-21 from the charity strike, which translates to an 81% free throw percentage on the night, and Donahue’s perfect 7-7 highly contributed to that efficiency against the Broncos.
During the postgame press conference, Donahue was asked what was going through her mind as she managed to force a turnover against Western Michigan during the waning minutes of the game.
“We knew we had to get a stop,” said Donahue. “I jumped fast. I didn’t think we would get it that fast, but just being able to anticipate that pass, I knew it was coming in. Just being able to jump the pass, knowing we needed it as a team.”
Bowling Green and Western Michigan exchanged punches all night long, playing extremely stout defense across the entire game. The Falcons shot 36.7% from the floor while Western Michigan shot 41.7% from the floor.
Next on the schedule is the Toledo Rockets, whom Bowling Green is set to play this upcoming Saturday at 2 p.m. inside the Stroh Center.
Falcon Media Sports Network’s Lucas Kleimeyer and Trey Kennedy will be broadcasting Saturday’s game with pregame coverage set to begin at 1:35 p.m. on WBGU 88.1 FM.
