The Mid-American Conference (MAC) softball regular season has entered its final month of play. As these teams become more comfortable in their identity, the stars of these teams start to emerge.
Senior utility Danielle Stewart, out of the Northern Illinois Huskies (12-11, 6-5), is one of the best hitters in the MAC. She bats a .471 average, which leads the conference. She is also responsible for 21 runs and 24 RBIs.
Her best batting performance was against the Ohio Bobcats (23-13, 7-5) on March 20th. In that game, she had two runs off of four hits, including a home run.
Senior pitcher Presley Hosick for the Miami RedHawks (26-10, 8-4) earned the MAC Pitcher of the Week. She won the award earlier in the season, after week 3.
In that week, she played in five games, starting in four of them. She pitched one shutout, allowed just nine hits, and had 11 strikeouts.
Taking home the most recent MAC Player of the Week award was junior shortstop Odyssey Torres from the UMass Minutemen (11-21, 3-9). She won the award in week 7 of the season, at the end of March.
In that week, Torres recorded two home runs against Toledo in the first game of their series. One of those home runs was a grand slam, the first of her career. She performed strongly in the second game of the series, going 3-3 from the plate with a double.
The Akron Zips (18-19, 10-3) have turned their season around. After losing 12 of their first 17 games, the Zips have since gone 13-7, including two series sweeps. They now sit on top of the MAC and control their own destiny.
