The city of Bowling Green’s Bicycle Safety Commission will host its first “slow roll” bike ride of the season Sunday, April 19, starting at the Montessori School of Bowling Green parking lot at 12:30 p.m.
Bike riders will be taking a ride along the Slippery Elm Trail, guided by ride leaders from the Bicycle Safety Commission and Wood County Park District Naturalist, Craige Spicer.
The ride is titled “Pedal for the Planet,” and will be a nature-focused ride where participants will be taught interesting nature facts and be shown a bike maintenance demonstration, provided by Bowling Green State University (BGSU), at the halfway point near the Portage Road intersection. After the ride, participants are encouraged to enjoy the annual Earth Day celebration hosted by local organizations on the Montessori campus.
“Pedal for the Planet” is free and open to everyone, and every rider is required to wear a properly-fitted helmet and ride a correctly-sized bicycle that is in safe, working mechanical order. The safety commission also recommends that young riders that are not able to travel on their own participate via a tow-behind trailer or child bike seat.
The safety commission hosts “slow rolls” monthly and they stress the importance of safe riding practices and responsibilities for riders while navigating city streets. “Pedal for the Planet” is designed to encourage people to be more recreational in nature and will travel at a speed comfortable for all participants.
