Great plays can turn tide of football game during playoff season

Let’s talk about something that took all of my attention and I’m sure many of yours this weekend and that is the NFL Playoffs.

First things first, the Saints vs Seahawks game Saturday afternoon. To me it was relatively boring until the fourth quarter when the Saints started to drive the ball down the field. Now there were three specific plays that had me with my jaw dropped during this game.

One being the Doug Baldwin catch on third down. It was just a great display of a receiver making a clutch play late. That catch setup the next play as Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch made the Saints’ defenders look like Toledo defenders as he got into the end zone and scored.

Lynch is known for making Saints’ defenders look stupid in the 2011 Wild Card round. He ran through every Saints defender on his way to a 67 yard touchdown run.

Beast Mode is a phrase used around sports describing players when they make a great play, but I don’t think it should be used for anyone else anymore besides Lynch.

Now this last play didn’t really drop my jaw in awe but in surprise. It was the last play of the game Saints quarterback Drew Brees connected with receiver Marques Colston with eight seconds left. Instead of stepping out of bounds like everyone thought he would do, he turned up field and decided to throw a pass across the field to another Saints receiver.

The refs called what was a clear forward pass and due to that there was a 10 second run off and the game was over. The Saints would go home losers and the Seahawks would go on to the NFC Championship game in one of the most bizarre endings I have ever seen.

I would even say the Alabama vs Auburn ending is more feasible than this ending. My roommate and I sat on our couch shocked and wondering what Colston was thinking. Was it a called play, or just a bone-headed play? You would think every NFL athlete would understand the rules but I guess not.

With that I can’t say I was upset because my pre-playoff pick was Seattle vs Denver in the Super Bowl. I’m not right very often when it comes to the NFL so I’m hoping this weekend goes as I planned.

The Playoffs aren’t over yet so let’s hope that more great end of the game plays happen. Tom Brady vs Peyton Manning and the 49ers defense vs the Seattle defense are both great matchups, with those I think we could be in for another great Sunday afternoon.
