Bowling Green State University (BGSU) offers more insight to why students should go to campus events.
Director for Student Engagement and Residence Life, Brian Heilmeier, shares his reasoning for why students should be involved in organizations.
“I really think it helps find your folks and help you get that sense of belonging here at BGSU. The other thing I think it does is it helps set you apart when you’re looking for jobs later on,” Heilmeier said.
Heilmeier shares a personal experience when he was applying for a job.
“When I went into interviews, I had the same degree as the 60, 70 people next to me. But what I was able to talk about is the experiences I had,” Heilmeier said. “It gives you those experiences that you can then take into the workplace.”
The Weeks of Welcome goes from the beginning of the school year Aug. 25 to fall break Oct. 6.
Heilmeier believes Weeks of Welcome is important for new students to be out of their comfort zones.
“I think it’s really important for new students in the sense that it gets them out of their rooms and it gets them interacting,” Heilmeier stated.
Some events listed in the Weeks of Welcome are football games, the career expo and fraternity and sorority recruitment.
Heilmeier’s job gives students the feeling of belonging in organizations and clubs.
“…you’ve maybe found a group or found an organization or found a place that you belong, that they know you can continue on the rest of the semester and hopefully the rest of the time you’re here,” Heilmeier said.
Some advice he gives students is to join two clubs during their first year on campus.
“I always tell students to get involved in two student organizations right off the bat, look for something that could help your career…then the other one is join an organization you just like, you enjoy…,” Heilmeier said.
