BGSU hockey (3-3-3, 3-1-3) took on the Ferris State Bulldogs (2-9, 1-4) at the Slater Ice Arena on Friday night. Bowling Green entered the game number three in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) standings, with Ferris State being number six.
The game was an offensive showdown, with the Falcons coming out victorious, scoring a season high nine goals in their 9-5 win. This also marks the first time the Orange and Brown had scored nine goals since Dec. 6, 2019.
“Feel good about winning and a lot of guys got on the point, on the score sheet,” said head coach Dennis Williams after the game. “I don’t think if you were to ask our guys, they’re happy for the win, but I don’t think they’re excited about how we played to our standard.”
Freshman forward Noah Morneau had a hat-trick game, scoring three goals, one of them being a power play. He also had six shots on goal and won 11 face-offs.
The first period saw the Falcons taking control of the game with seven shots on goal, and two goals being scored. Both those goals were scored by freshman forward Dominik Rymon, putting him at three goals on the season.
The entirety of the second period was electrifying, with both teams combining for six goals, three each. The teams also combined for 21 shots on goal.
“We don’t play to a scoreboard, we play to standards. Regardless of us coming out of the second up a couple of goals, it didn’t matter and it just wasn’t our best,” said Morneau postgame.
Ferris State opened the period very strongly, with senior forward Josh Zary scoring a goal after only 40 seconds of game time.
The period continued and Bowling Green was able to expand their lead with a goal by Morneau. The Bulldogs wasted no time responding, however, with senior forward Gavin Best scoring a goal just 12 seconds later.
BG’s offensive rampage was relentless, with junior forward Tyler Hotson and freshman forward Jake Sloan scoring back-to-back goals.
The Bulldogs were able to respond with a goal of their own with 30 seconds left in the period, making the score 5-3 in BGSU’s favor before the final period.
“As a five-man group, I think we can all be better. I know for myself, I kind of blew the zone for their goal at the end of the second,” Morneau said postgame.
The third period was just as exciting as the first two. Both teams combined for another six goals, four for the Orange and Brown and two for the Bulldogs. Morneau scored two more goals for the Falcons, one of which was a power play.
“Some really nice power play goals, but we need that,” said Williams. “They play such an influential part in the game. It can keep you in the game, or it can separate you in the game.”
Goals were also scored by junior forward Brody Waters and junior defenseman Gustav Stjernberg. The Falcons were able to come out on top over the Bulldogs, with a huge 9-5 victory.
BGSU turns its attention back to Ferris State tomorrow for the second game of the series on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. They will be back at the Slater Ice Arena for that game.
