BGSU hockey (4-3-3, 4-1-3) completed the weekend sweep, defeating Ferris State 5-2 on Saturday night.
The animosity that was seen in Friday’s matchup was quickly renewed when, just 36 seconds into the game, a scuffle broke out behind the net of sophomore goaltender Martin Lundberg that led to a penalty and the Falcons being shorthanded early.
The early underhanded start for the Orange and Brown would prove to be no issue with the Falcons killing off the penalty, something that head coach Dennis Williams believes the team did well all night.
“They did really well. Curtis Carr did an unbelievable job, making some adjustments on that, killing that, so credit to him, credit to the [defense], and the [penalty killers],” said Williams.
The scoring started shortly after the midway point of the first period. Opening the scoring for Bowling Green was freshman forward Noah Morneau, assisted by senior forward Quinn Emerson and freshman forward Dominik Rymon.
Senior forward Jaden Grant would continue to push the momentum for the Falcons, scoring back-to-back goals within a span of 20 seconds and extending the score to 3-0.
The first of Grant’s goals came with 7:23 remaining in the first period and was assisted by Emerson and senior defender Jack Blake. The second goal was assisted by junior forward Tyler Hotson and sophomore forward Max Martin.
“When we played our style and identity of playing simple, playing behind their D, reloading at the right times, I think that’s what generates the offense,” said Grant. “It was a jam play in front of the net. So, I’m just trying to stay around the house, stay right in front of the net. Usually, good things happen when you are there.”
BGSU Sophomore goalie Tyler Palmer made a crucial save late in the first period for the Falcons, stopping an open opportunity from redshirt junior forward Carter Rapalje.
Early in the second period, the Falcons would have what appeared to be a fourth straight goal called back on an offside call. The Bulldogs would take this mistake as an opportunity to gain some momentum, recording their first goal of the night off the stick of senior forward John Lundy.
Nearly six minutes into the third and final period, junior forward Brody Waters recorded his second goal on the weekend, extending the Falcons’ lead to 4-1. The goal was assisted by junior forward Ben Doran and freshman forward Brandon Whynott, marking Whynott’s first collegiate point.
The Bulldogs would close the deficit to two points again after a top-shelf unassisted goal from Carter Rapalje, his third goal of the season.
Palmer came up with another huge save late in the third period for the Falcons, making an up-close save with multiple Bulldogs in the paint area, this save adding to his 24 total saves on the night and keeping the score 4-2.
Brody Waters would put the game on ice for the Falcons, scoring a goal with 34 seconds remaining and extending the Falcons’ lead to the final score of 5-2. Morneau would record his second point of the night, recording an assist on the goal alongside senior forward Jackson Neidermayer.
The Falcons will look to bring the momentum of this weekend’s sweep into next week’s matchup, where they head on the road to take on St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. First puck drop for the matchup will be Friday, Nov.21, at 8:07 P.M.
