As the BGSU men’s basketball (3-2) fell to William and Mary (3-2) 82-74, the offensive woes for Bowling Green have been a big issue.
Between Davidson and William and Mary, the Falcons shot a combined 4-30 from behind the three-point line, an abysmal 13.3%. Moving forward through the season, the Orange and Brown must find a way to get back into a rhythm.
“At the end of the day, we couldn’t put the ball in the basket, and that’s going to make it really difficult to beat anybody when you shoot 3-19 from three,” head coach Todd Simon said after the loss to William and Mary.
Of every player who stepped on the court and attempted a 3-pointer, only Mayar Wol, with two, and Javon Ruffin were able to knock down a three.
“When a majority of our shooters are cold on the same day is not ideal, I thought we had really good looks, but you know we’ve got to knock them down,” Simon said.
One of the biggest problems that the Falcons faced with the lack of behind-the-arc production was that teams then started to pack the paint.
“We get wide open looks, at some point, you just got to step up and make them, or you get the next man up, and that’s really the only solution because, if you don’t shoot them, you’re going to have no space to operate,” Simon said.
Getting back into the gym and seeing more shots fall during practice can help the Falcons get their rhythm back.
“Just really being sharper in practice, of being more attentive, and just getting in the gym. We have got to shoot more in the gym and make our shots and make sure we’re on top of everything,” Troy Glover II said.
It’s not just being able to hit the shots in the half-court, but bringing urgency to the defense to open the offense so that players can get open looks.
“We need to be able to score points off our defense, which we did for stretches in the second half, but that was not what we expect from us on the defensive end,” coach Simon said.
Although the offense is going through a slump, coach Simon believes it will find its level.
“Water usually finds its levels. The guys that are 40% that’s not shooting that right now will, I think, usually end up finding their way back to that number and hopefully it will be a barrage of threes sooner than later.” Simon said.
The team has very little time to think about this loss and the offensive performance as they travel to Fort Myers for a tournament.
“Just putting this behind us and having a quick memory and just moving forward,” said Justin Thomas.

They need to really work on their offensive rebounding! Shot goes up and 5 players are 10-20 feet from the basket. CRASH the boards!
