BGSU men’s basketball (11-6, 2-3) fell to the Akron Zips (12-4, 3-1) at the Stroh Center Friday night despite a career-high in points from junior forward Mayar Wol.
In his third start with the Falcons, Wol exploded for 32 points on 13-for-20 from the field and 5-of-9 from 3-point range.
Getting into a flow early in the game, Wol credits his teammates with finding him for the shots.
“My teammates were just finding me today, and I was hitting,” Wol said postgame.
It’s not just that his teammates were finding him, but they would continue to find him throughout the game as he racked up points. Wol scored 24 points in the second half, including the team’s first 17 points out of the locker room.
“Credit to our guys, this group is so unselfish that when they know it’s someone else’s night, they get them the ball,” head coach Todd Simon said.
When a player like Wol gets into a flow for the Falcons, it is very hard for other teams to slow him down.
“Just a fantastic scorer. He’s the guy that we’ve got a whole set of, I think I ran 20 plays for him, just because when he gets going, there’s nothing you can do,” Simon said.
This scoring outburst comes after Wol missed two shots late in the loss to Kent State on Tuesday.
“That’s part of what makes him who he is. He’s got supreme confidence. He had two great looks, so he came back without conscience and goes for 32,” Simon said.
In his three starts with the Orange and Brown, Wol is averaging 21.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game.
Not only is Wol a scorer of the highest level, but he is also a very versatile player, playing a multitude of different positions and guarding different positions to help the team fight back in games.
With Wol picking up more minutes with the mid-season injury bug hitting the Falcons and lineups starting to tighten, expect the Foward to have more opportunities to go off for big games with BGSU.
The Falcons are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. as Bowling Green welcomes the Eastern Michigan Eagles to the Stroh Center. Falcon Media Sports Network will have the live radio broadcast with the pregame show starting at 12:30 p.m. on Falcon Radio, streaming on bgfalconmedia.com.
