BSGU hockey’s rookie defenseman Ty Higgins was named CCHA’s Rookie of the Week. Higgins is the third Falcon to be named Rookie of the Week and the sixth to earn a weekly award.
Higgins did not play in the 2025 segment of this season, playing his first regular-season game in a scoreless effort against Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio.
The Falcons and Higgins traveled to Ferris State for their first conference series of 2026, where he scored an assist in the first game and three in the second. He had a hand on half of the Falcon goals against FSU.
The Stratford, Ontario native also threw up four shots, taking two penalties in the first game and finishing the weekend with a +1 rating. His four assists were added to two from the second game at Ohio State.
Higgins played his most recent two seasons with the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and the three seasons previous as an Acadie-Bathurst Titan. He played a total of 208 games between both teams in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL), scoring 156 points.
His most recent season-long effort was as a Husky in 2024-25, scoring 19 goals and 48 assists in 63 games, a point-per-game season as a defenseman. Higgins currently has six points/assists in four games played this season and is searching for his first career goal in the next series at home against Lake Superior State.
