BGSU football special teams coordinator Alex Bayer is leaving the program for the same position at Syracuse, Syracuse announced Wednesday night.
Bayer has been on staff with the Falcons since he was hired by former head coach Scot Loeffler on Jan. 13, 2022. He also served as the team’s tight ends coach during the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
The Pickerington, Ohio, native played tight end for BGSU, graduating in 2013 after winning a Mid-American Conference (MAC) Championship under head coach Dave Clawson and earning First Team All-MAC honors.
He held the record for most receptions (115) and receiving yards (1,543) by a tight end in program history until they were broken by Harold Fannin Jr. during the 2024 season, whom he coached during his record-breaking campaign.
Before joining the coaching staff at BG, Bayer was graduate assistant at Otterbein from 2016-18, special teams analyst at Wake Forest from 2019-20 and special teams coordinator/tight ends coach at Valparaiso in 2021.
BGSU athletics confirmed the program has been conducting a national search for Bayer’s replacement.
