The 2026 Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament delivered no shortage of surprises at ForeFront Field in Avon, Ohio.
After four days of postseason baseball featuring dominant pitching performances and early exits from the conference’s top seeds, the fourth-seeded Northern Illinois Huskies emerged as champions. The Huskies defeated the third-seeded Toledo Rockets 5-1 on Saturday night to secure the program’s first MAC Baseball Tournament championship, and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Northern Illinois finished the week unbeaten, knocking off the MAC regular season champion and putting together one of the tournament’s most impressive runs in recent years.
Opening round sets the tone
The tournament opened Wednesday with Toledo earning an 8-2 victory over sixth-seeded Ball State behind a dominant performance from 2026 MAC Pitcher of the Year Nathan Leininger.
Leininger tossed a complete game, striking out eight and allowing just two runs to preserve Toledo’s bullpen for the remainder of the tournament. The Rockets collected 12 hits offensively, redshirt junior infielder Troy Sudbrook helped set the tone by launching a home run and driving in two runs.
Later that evening, Northern Illinois made an emphatic statement.
The Huskies routed fifth-seeded Western Michigan 11-0 in seven innings behind a complete-game shutout from senior pitcher Max Vaisvila, who struck out 10 batters and allowed just one hit. Northern Illinois wasted little time taking control, scoring four runs in the third inning behind home runs from graduate student outfielder Gavin Baldwin and senior infielder Cole Smith.
The dominant victory also proved significant for another reason: Northern Illinois advanced without using its bullpen, an advantage that later became crucial during the tournament.
Day two turns the bracket upside down
If the opening round hinted at unpredictability, Thursday completely reshaped the tournament.
Northern Illinois and the top-seeded Miami RedHawks delivered what may have been the game of the tournament in a 15-inning marathon.
Locked in a back-and-forth battle for nearly five hours, the Huskies stunned the regular season MAC champions 6-5 after senior catcher Ivan Dahlberg delivered a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the 15th inning.
The effort on the mound proved equally impressive. Northern Illinois pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts, led by sophomore Carter Cox, who struck out a career-high 12 batters in 5.1 innings. Baldwin stayed hot at the plate, blasting his 10th home run of the season and driving in two runs.
The upset immediately shifted the bracket, pushing the tournament favorite into an elimination game.
Toledo added to the chaos Thursday night with one of the tournament’s most dominant performances, shutting out the second-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes 8-0.
Freshman outfielder Liam Arsich starred for the Rockets, collecting two hits, driving in two runs and stealing two bases. Redshirt freshman pitcher Michael Fliss silenced Kent State’s offense across seven innings of one-hit baseball, striking out eight.
Suddenly, both top seeds found themselves fighting to keep their seasons alive.
Elimination Friday brings pressure
Friday began with immediate stakes.
Kent State responded after Thursday’s loss, eliminating Miami with a 3-1 victory and ending the regular season champions’ tournament after just two games.
Senior pitcher Ciaran Caughey turned in a strong pitching performance, tossing seven innings and allowing only one earned run with seven strikeouts. Senior catcher Brody Williams added a home run, and sophomore utility player Sawyer Solitaria contributed two hits and an RBI as Kent State survived to advance.
Miami’s abrupt exit became one of the tournament’s biggest surprises after entering Avon with a conference-best 25 wins and a first-round bye.
Kent State later kept its season alive again, defeating Western Michigan 6-1 behind a 12-hit performance. Junior outfielder Alejandro Covas led the offensive surge with four hits, three RBIs and a pivotal three-run home run. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Ben Rabatin added a strong outing on the mound, allowing one earned run in 5.1 innings.
Northern Illinois again looked like the tournament’s best team.
Facing Toledo in the winner’s bracket final Friday night, the Huskies earned a commanding 10-3 victory to move one win away from a championship.
After a close battle early, Northern Illinois broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning. Freshman outfielder Wyatt Wawro scored four runs and collected three hits, while Smith delivered the dagger with a grand slam as part of a five-RBI night. Junior pitcher Danny Cihocki gave Northern Illinois exactly what it needed after the taxing 15-inning game the day before, striking out seven across 7.2 innings.
The win sent Northern Illinois directly to the championship game and forced Toledo into another elimination matchup.
Championship Saturday
Toledo kept its season alive Saturday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Kent State to earn a rematch with Northern Illinois.
Sudbrook powered the Rockets with a home run and two runs scored. Junior infielder JP Wagner collected three hits, including two doubles, and redshirt freshman pitcher Nate Langbehn gave Toledo seven strong innings, allowing just two hits and striking out six before redshirt junior pitcher Ryan Hughes closed the door in relief.
After surviving the elimination bracket, Toledo once again faced a Northern Illinois team that had looked complete from start to finish.
In the championship game Saturday night, the Huskies secured a 5-1 victory to claim the first MAC Tournament title in program history.
Baldwin starred once again, homering and driving in three runs. Smith added two RBIs as Northern Illinois capitalized offensively in key moments.
The Huskies’ pitching staff remained dominant, striking out 10 batters and limiting Toledo to one run. Junior pitcher Cooper Cohn earned the win after tossing four scoreless innings, and Tournament MVP Max Vaisvila returned in relief after throwing a complete-game shutout earlier in the week.
Northern Illinois finished the tournament undefeated at 4-0, completing a run that included wins over Western Michigan, Miami and Toledo twice.
Northern Illinois entered as the No. 4 seed searching for a postseason run and left with something much bigger — history.
In the program’s final season as a member of the MAC, the Huskies closed the chapter in fitting fashion, ending their conference era as tournament champions.
