BGSU hockey (14-6-4) (11-4-3 CCHA) successfully sweeps the Bemidji State Beavers (9-14-3) (7-8-3 CCHA) by a final score of 5-1.
Junior center Ben Doran tallied his fifth goal of the season. Notable for Doran, as he not only scored for the Falcons, but he also had an assist, as well as four penalty minutes. This would end up placing him third on the team in penalty minutes for the game.
As a team, the Falcons had 19 penalty minutes in the game, yet succeeded on the penalty kill with the Orange and Brown going 6/6.
An undisciplined BG team tonight with 25 shots on net connected on five of them, leading to their eventual victory. Scoring two in the first period with goals from 13 shots, and the goals coming from Doran and freshman center Jake Sloan. That would be Sloan’s second of the season, and he would also earn his fourth assist of the season.
What made a difference, however, was the man with the most penalty minutes in a single game this season for BGSU (15 minutes), earning a goal. Junior defenseman Gustav Stjernberg left the game after being ejected for a hit.
Bemidji, who trailed Bowling Green the entire game, would mark eight shots on goal in the second period, where BG only had seven. Not only were there more shots in the second period by BSU, but they also blocked more shots than BG, with 14 to BGSU’s 10.
While his name would not find the goal column, Bowling Green would be impacted by redshirt senior Jackson Niedermayer. Similar to Sloan, where he would earn his seventh assist of the year.
Freshman goaltender Jacob Steinman got the opportunity tonight. Following a 26-save performance from junior Cole Moore on Friday. Steinman finished tonight with 23 saves and a save percentage of 95.8%.
As for Bemidji, their lone goal of the contest would come from junior forward Kasper Magnussen, his ninth of the season. His goal would be assisted by sophomore defenseman Hudson Thornton. Magnussen and Thornton were the only two on the scoresheet tonight for BSU.
This Beavers loss continues the losing streak for the Beavers, who have a six-game losing streak in CCHA play and have yet to secure a regulation victory since Nov. 22. Their win came against Northern Michigan (1-24-0, 1-16-0) by a final score of 6-2.
Next up, the Falcons will play a home-and-home series against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The first game takes place in South Bend, Indiana, on Friday, Jan. 30, and the second at the Slater Family Ice Arena on Saturday, Jan. 31.
Falcon Media Sports Network will have full coverage of the series on bgfalconmedia.com.
