The BGSU men’s basketball team was consistently inconsistent throughout January.
Sitting in seventh place in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) at 14-9 and 5-6 in conference play, and as of now, the Falcons just scrape by to make the postseason tournament.
In January, BGSU went 3-5, with three of those games being single-possession losses: Kent State 96-93, Toledo 73-72, and Central Michigan 62-59. Each one of those losses tells a different story about the Falcons
In the loss to Kent State, the offense for the Falcons was rolling, as they finished the game shooting 50.9% from the field, 40% from three and 87.1% from the free-throw line.
Toledo would have a similar story for BGSU, an offense that was rolling and shooting 12.4% better than the Rockets from the field, 52.7% to 40.3% and would still end up losing.
With both losses, the Falcons shot better than their season averages, but allowed opponents to shoot much better than their season average.
The game against Central Michigan would completely flip the script for the Falcons, shooting 35.7% from the field, 25% from three and 58.3% the Falcons had one of their worst offensive performances in this game.
The 59 points the Falcons scored in the loss to the Chippewas is a season low and the only time this season that they were held to under 60 points.
The team has yet to find consistency on both ends of the court, and it is something that has been seen before.
During the non-conference, the Orange and Brown held Kansas State to 66 points while scoring 82. It is one of the most well-rounded games the Falcons have put together this season.
Even more recently, with the 77-52 win over the Ball State Cardinals, the Falcons looked to have settled into a rhythm.
“We kinda put together the full 40 minutes finally, we kinda been doing it on the offensive or the defensive end, we kinda had all facets going tonight,” head coach Todd Simon said.
Coming off that win vs Ball State, the Falcons fell in one of their worst games of the season, shooting 30.5% from the field and 8.3% from three. While their opponents, the Arkansas State Red Wolves, 51.6% from the field and 41.9% from three.
The loss, a 91-54 game in favor of the Red Wolves, is the worst defeat of the season and the three years under Simon.
It was a disaster on all fronts for the Falcons as they lost by 37 points, and now, with the second half of MAC play on the horizon, the Falcons need to find a groove and stick in it.
Keeping all facets of the game going will be paramount with the end of the regular season drawing close, and with the schedule ahead, the Falcons must find a groove and stick with it.
The Falcons are back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. as they travel to DeKalb, Illinois, to face the Northern Illinois Huskies.
