BGSU hockey freshman netminder Jacob Steinman earned CCHA Goaltender of the Week following his performance on Saturday night of Bowling Green (15-7-6, 12-5-3) and No. 15 St. Thomas’ (18-9-3, 15-5-2) weekend series.
Steinman backstopped the Orange and Brown to a 3-1 victory on Saturday night, making 31 saves and recording a .969 save percentage.
His performance marked only the second time all season that a goaltender held the Tommies to just one goal, following Minnesota State’s (15-8-5, 11-6-3) senior goaltender Alex Tracy accomplishing the feat on Oct. 31.
Saturday’s performance was one of the best performances in Steinman’s young college career and lifted his season stat line to a .920 save percentage and a 2.16 goals against average, while making 347 saves across the 15 games he’s appeared in.
This week’s award marks the first CCHA weekly award in Steinman’s college career and the first time a Falcon has won the Goaltender of the Week award since Christian Stoever won it following the first round of last year’s CCHA Mason Cup playoffs.
Steinman’s award also marks the ninth CCHA weekly award of the season awarded to a BGSU hockey player, with senior forward Quinn Emerson, junior forward Tyler Hotson, freshman forward Noah Morneau, freshman forward Dominik Rymon, senior defenseman Jackson Niedermayer, junior defenseman Breck McKinley and freshman defenseman Ty Higgins combining for three Forward of the Week awards, three Rookie of the Week awards and two Defenseman of the Week awards across the season.
Steinman and the Falcons will travel to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to face the Augustana Vikings (18-9-3, 12-7-2) at Midco Arena on Feb. 13 and 14.
