Entering February, BGSU men’s basketball desperately needed a role player to step up and generate production off the bench.
One player has responded to the initiative: Aiden Goins.
The 6-foot-9 junior forward scored 10 points in the team’s 80-70 Battle of I-75 victory over Toledo on Saturday, marking his second double-digit scoring performance in the past four games.
“AG’s the iso G.O.A.T. He can do that every night,” sophomore guard Josiah Shackelford said after the win.
Over his first 15 games played, Goins averaged only 4.1 points and 0.9 rebounds per game.
In four games in February, he has averaged 7.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per contest.
“We found ways that we like to use him. Teams are starting to double. Teams that don’t double, he’s a load. If you do double, he’s a good passes, which leads to other offense for us,” head coach Todd Simon said. “So, it’s tricky, it’s a catch-22. But we’re really glad to have him on our side.”
Goins is starting to show his potential as he continues to adjust to the Division I level.
Last season, the Knoxville, Tennessee, native earned All-Tennessee Community College Athletic Association (TCCAA) First Team honors, averaging 15.8 points and 5.3 rebounds per game, shooting 53.4% from the field and 42.7% on 3-pointers at Walters State.
Goins dominated in the paint during stretches of the team’s win over the Rockets, grabbing two offensive rebounds and consistently using post-moves to beat Austin Parks, Toledo’s 6-foot-10 center, to the basket.
“AG’s kind of a cheat code. He’s so good on the block,” Simon said. “We haven’t really seen how well he shoots it yet; he shoots the cover off it, and he’s done a spectacular job.”
Goins, who is listed at 275 pounds, has worked hard since he arrived in Bowling Green, losing over 50 pounds since June.
“He’s working his tail off to get himself into a position to be a dominant player for stretches of a game,” Simon said.
Next, Goins and the Falcons will host Kent State at the Stroh Center on Tuesday at 7 p.m., seeking their third straight win.
