Games around Mid-American Conference (MAC) men’s basketball largely went Bowling Green’s way this past weekend.
Miami (25-0, 12-0) took down Ohio (13-13, 7-6) in a convincing 90-74 victory, which kept the RedHawks in the top spot and dropped the Bobcats to a fifth-place tie with the Falcons.
Akron (20-5, 11-1) and Kent State (19-7, 10-3) victories allowed them to keep pace with Miami and create further distance between the top three teams and the rest of the pack, while the losses they dealt UMass and Ball State, respectively, helped put the Falcons one step further to locking down a tournament bid.
The Falcons (16-10, 7-6) Battle of I-75 win over Toledo (13-13, 7-6) in front of a raucous Stroh crowd created a three-way tie for the fourth tournament seed between BG, Toledo and Ohio.
When the dust settled, here’s what the tournament field would look like if the season ended today:
No. 1 Miami and No. 8 Buffalo Bulls (15-10, 5-7). Those two have clashed twice in the regular season, with Miami barely winning each time.
No. 4 Bowling Green and No. 5 Toledo. A possible third round of the Battle of I-75 should make all MAC basketball fans excited.
No. 2 Akron and No. 7 UMass. This would be a repeat of last weekend’s game which was a Wild West shootout.
No. 3 Kent State and No. 6 Ohio. The Golden Flashes cruised past the Bobcats in their only meeting this season.
