The Miami RedHawks (26-13, 14-7) took down the Michigan Wolverines (24-16, 10-8) in a 12-10 upset. This marks another big win for Miami and its second win over a Big Ten team this season.
The RedHawks saw a record-breaking attendance, with 1,643 fans showing up to support their team. This breaks their previous attendance record after McKie Field opened in 2002.
Miami struggled early in the game against Michigan, giving up three runs in the first inning due to four hits and an error. At the bottom of the second, the RedHawks tied the game after hitting three consecutive home runs.
After tying the game, Miami held the Wolverines at bay for the remainder of the game. In the sixth inning, Michigan hit two homers of their own to bring the game within two runs, 10-8.
Despite this, the Wolverines were unable to take the lead. As the pitchers continued to struggle, they allowed two more runs. Because of this, Miami was able to walk away with a season-defining win.
Sophomore catcher Carson Raether was an important piece in Miami’s win. He had three runs, two hits, and an RBI. His three runs included a homer, which was the RedHawk’s first run of the game.
The Western Michigan Broncos (20-16, 14-7) had a successful weekend, winning their series over the Eastern Michigan Eagles (11-25, 6-15). The Broncos scored 27 total runs over the three-game series, 24 of which were scored across two games.
WMU senior infielder Avery Thielman took home the MAC Player of the Week award. He recorded three home runs, eight RBIs, a .643 on-base percentage, and 1.417 slugging percentage. In the game on Sunday, he recorded his first career multiple-home run game.
The Central Michigan Chippewas (17-20, 9-12) have been struggling this season, but caught a break in their series win this weekend over the Ohio Bobcats (8-31, 5-16). They took down Ohio in the series’ first game, 15-5 in only seven innings.
