The name for the Sylvania-based band Boxfan was supposed to be temporary.
“It was originally a placeholder, a friend had blurted it out during lunch period… we said we were going to change it one day… but we forgot to,” explained Jack, who along with Caden,Tyler, Ethan and Elijah make up Boxfan.
Caden plays guitar and occasionally sings, Tyler plays the drums, Jack plays guitars and occasionally sings, Ethan plays bass and Elijiah sings and occasionally plays guitar.
Boxfan mixes some indie rock with its alternative-rock sound.
The new song “Sergania” – available to stream on Spotify – it starts quiet, but with a powerful beat lying underneath, you know you’re in for something loud – around 18 seconds in and there it is, a guitar and drum heavy foundation. Their lyrics are quick and intricate, a good scream-along song – but it may take some time to learn the exact words.
All of Boxfan’s members are still in high school, balancing their education, clubs and band duties – which can be tough.
“It’s weird, we have so much stuff to do … we’re trying to lock-in but we have a band and it’s kind of going somewhere now … it’s weird,” explained Jack.
They played their first show at the Sodbuster, a bar in Sylvania, which packed hundreds of other high schoolers into the small space, to watch Boxfan do their thing.
“I remember that first show… I looked up from tuning my guitar and there were hundreds of people in the crowd. Our first show ever and it was a packed house,” Jack said. “Kind of been chasing that feeling ever since.”
Since then, they’ve gotten a lot more comfortable within the band, and have noticed changes within themselves – constantly growing as artists as the days go on.
“I think our confidence has gotten so much better now. Personally, I’m now able to sing with my chest a little bit more… not as timid,” explained Elijiah while reminiscing on their first performance.
