BGSU men’s soccer (0-0-1) tied in the opening night against IU Indy (0-0-1) at Cochrane Stadium. With a second-half goal scored by junior forward Bennett Painter
“We showed really good resolve to not lose the game. There are a lot of teams that probably would have lost this game tonight,” said senior Andrew Shaffer.
The Falcons started the game off strong, keeping the pressure on the Jaguars’ defense and getting up two shots on goal.
IU Indy would not bend under the pressure with senior goalkeeper Cameron Maung-Manug making both saves that came his way.
With Bowling Green keeping up the pressure throughout the first half, they were able to accumulate four corner kicks.
Both teams played an ultra-aggressive brand of soccer that saw each team tally seven fouls.
Out of the halftime break, the Jaguars put a lot of pressure on the Falcons’ defensive line, and that pressure would pay off for them with senior Youri Keijser finding the back of the net.
The Falcons would not back down, though, as they kept up the offensive pressure, racking up seven more corner kicks in the second half of play for 11 in the entire match.
Those corner kicks would prove to be essential to the orange and brown offense as Shaffer would find Painter for the equalizer at the 78-minute mark.
We were resilient and stayed in there, and we got the draw. So definitely positives, but a lot to work on,” said head coach Eric Nichols.
The Falcons are back in action on Sunday, Aug. 24, as they travel to Indianapolis, Indiana, to face the Butler Bulldogs in a 7 p.m. matchup.
