WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — BGSU volleyball (2-2) pushed No. 15 Kansas (2-3) to the limit Wednesday at the Stacey Clark Classic, but the Jayhawks prevailed in a tense four-set match, winning 3-1. Despite the loss, the Falcons showed resilience against one of the nation’s top programs.
The setback dropped Bowling Green to 2-2 on the season and marked its first loss of the tournament. The Falcons will have two more opportunities to rebound at the Stacey Clark Classic as play continues this week.
Kansas controlled the early match, taking the first two sets behind a balanced attack that produced 56 kills on 127 swings and a .276 hitting percentage. The Jayhawks added 50 assists, six service aces, and 11 blocks, including four without error, helping them hold a 62.5 percent side-out efficiency.
Bowling Green responded in the third set, earning its lone frame of the match. Sophomore outside hitter Lauryn Hovey powered the Falcons with 12 kills on 32 attacks (.156 hitting percentage) and added two service aces, two block assists, and nine digs, finishing with 15 points.
Middle blocker Helen Wilford contributed seven kills on a .417 hitting percentage and added two block assists for eight points, helping BGSU capture the set.
Kansas regrouped in the fourth set, using steady offense and defense control at the net to close out the match. The Falcons finished with 40 kills on 132 attacks (.121 hitting percentage), 36 assists, seven service aces, and eight blocks, while side-out lagged at 49.5 percent.
Despite the loss, Bowling Green left the floor with positives, proving it can compete against a top 15 opponent and showing flashes of high-level play that could carry into the remainder of the Stacey Clark Classic.
The Falcons will next face No.17 Purdue on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak will have the call on WBGU 88.1 FM starting at 6:45 p.m.
