The BGSU volleyball team (2-5) began the Loyola Invitational in a difficult three-set defeat against the Indiana Hoosiers (6-0).
Bowling Green is one of four teams in this event, with other competitors being the Indiana Hoosiers, Stephen F Austin Lumberjacks, and Loyola Chicago Ramblers.
The first set was a 25-21 victory for the Hoosiers, where their notable players were Candela Alonso-Corcelles, who recorded 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .300%. As well as Avry Tatum, who aided IU into the overall match with 11 kills and a hitting percentage of .579%, more than anyone on the team.
The Hoosiers overall would have 15 kills and 42 total attempts, which outmatched BGSU, who had 11 kills to 29 total attempts.
As the second set would take place as well, the Falcons lost by a score of 25-19, scoring two fewer points than in the first set. Some positives we observed, however, were that BG did not have a single attack error during the second set, and they also were able to record more Total Attempts with an improvement from 29-40 TA.
Throughout the match, Bowling Green struggled to keep up with the Indiana Hoosiers, even when, during the third set, they kept up on attacks, having 105 during the game. BGSU also led the Hoosiers in the total amount of digs, leading 41–36 for the entire game.
The Hoosiers and the Falcons found themselves tied 10 times throughout the match, with BGSU able to regain the lead from Indiana twice during the first set and three times during the second set.
A win streak will continue for the Indiana Hoosiers as they are now on a 6-0 start to the season, while the Falcons have lost their last three games, with only two wins this season to St. Mary’s and Temple. Both of those games would go to four sets, where BGSU would win three out of the four total sets.
MAC Offensive Player of the Week and senior opposite hitter Lauryn Hovey would lead not only the Falcons but all players in the match statistically with a total of 14 kills and 32 total attempts.
The Falcons will be back at it again in the Windy City for the Loyola Invitational, where they battle Stephen F Austin tomorrow at Gentile Arena at 3:00 p.m.
