Following BGSU volleyball’s homestand this past week against the Ohio Bobcats and the Kent State Golden Flashes, BGSU redshirt sophomore middle blocker Helen Wilford received the Mid-American Conference defensive player of the week honor.
The award is Wilford’s first, starting this season after redshirting last season due to injury. The middle blocker had 15 total blocks through the Falcons’ two matches this week, with one solo block and 14 blocking assists.
For the two matches that spanned seven sets in total, Wilford averaged 2.14 blocks per set. That average of blocks per set is better than that of eight other MAC teams. She already has 61 blocks so far this season, placing her in third for total blocks in the MAC.
With two wins this week against Ohio and Kent State, the Orange and Brown sit at 8-6 on the season, and undefeated (2-0) in conference play.
This week, the Falcons travel north to face off against Eastern Michigan on Friday, Oct. 3, at 6 p.m., and then Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 4 p.m. Be sure to tune into WBGU 88.1 for both of those games with Flalcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak and Andrew Smith.
