BGSU volleyball (12-7, 6-1) beat the Northern Illinois Huskies (10-6, 3-4) in three straight sets on Friday.
The Falcons in the matchup showed no quit, falling into deficits early against the Huskies, but digging deep and fighting back into the match.
“I think our team responded to some of the hard really well and matured tonight. We got through some hard things and still found ways to get out of it, keep our cool and find a way to win,” head coach Alex DelPiombo said postgame.
During sets two and three, the Falcons were behind early in the set but found a way to dig deep and take the sets to win each of them.
“It creates a lot of conviction and belief know that no matter what the circumstance is, we can still find our way out of it,” DelPiombo said.
For Bowling Green, in the situation they are in, to be able to find ways to win after falling early gives the team more conviction of what they can do throughout the season and beyond.
“This is something that we trained for. We trained to never give up and have conviction and moments of what seem to be doubt,” Isabelle Laube said. “So, it is nothing that we haven’t done before.”
Although the slow starts are something that the Orange and Brown are not happy with, the way that they show no quit is something to continue to build on throughout the season.
“Ideally, we don’t start down like that, because I thought that a lot of those points had to do with us, not as much to do with NIU,” stated DelPiombo.
The Falcons had some self-inflicted mistakes on their slow starts; they have time to make changes and fix those mistakes. As they adapt to a new way to play, the team will find their footing better, and the slow starts should disappear.
“We’re going to keep working on that in practice next week. Don’t worry, we will address some of those things,” head coach DelPiombo said when asked about the slow starts that the Falcons had.
The Falcons are back in action on Thursday, as they welcome the Ball State Cardinals to the Stroh Center with first serve set for 6 p.m. Falcon Media Sports Network will have the live radio broadcast, which is set to start at 5:45 p.m.
