BGSU softball (7-2) experienced a mixed bag in Johnson City, Tennessee, on Saturday, starting the day with a dominant 12-0 run-rule victory over Tennessee State (0-6) before falling narrowly in a 3-2 battle against East Tennessee State (6-1).
The Falcons showcased both offensive firepower and defensive resilience across the two contests. While the bats exploded for 11 hits and 12 runs in the morning matchup, the lineup struggled to find its rhythm in game two against a tough ETSU squad.
Game One vs. Tennessee State
The Falcons opened the day by unleashing a chaotic offensive showcase, run-ruling Tennessee State 12-0 in six innings.
The pitching duo of sophomore Madison Wendel and Morgan Beckham completely silenced the Tigers, combining for a two-hit shutout. Wendel started the game and pitched 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out three, while Becham entered in the sixth to close out the game with a flawless inning of relief.
Redshirt sophomore third baseman Addie Martin was the undisputed star of the offense, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and a massive five RBIs. Junior shortstop Cameron Kaufman was equally impressive, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a home run, and two RBIs while scoring three times.
Martin gave BGSU an early 2-0 advantage with a two-run homer to center field in the second inning. The Falcons then broke the game wide open with a four-run fourth inning, fueled by Martin’s second two-run homer of the day.
Bowling Green put the game entirely out of reach in the sixth. Junior first baseman Taylor Behrendt delivered a clutch three-run double to left center. Kaufman immediately followed up by crushing a two-run homer to left field, capping off a five-run inning and securing the 12-0 final.
Game Two vs East Tennessee State
In the second matchup, the Falcons found themselves in a tight defensive struggle against East Tennessee State, ultimately falling 3-2.
Bowling Green wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the top of the first inning. Senior designated player Katie Hutter reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to second, and then scored an unearned run when second baseman Hannah Hunt reached on a fielding error.
ETSU tied the game in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly and later took the lead for good in the fourth inning on a two-run home run from Payton Moore.
Junior pitcher Alyvia Roth took the loss for the Falcons but went the distance, tossing 6.0 innings. While she surrendered five walks, she only allowed two hits and three runs in the complete game effort.
The Falcons attempted to mount a late comeback when Hunt launched a solo home run to deep right field in the top of the sixth, but the rally fell short as BGSU stranded five runners on base throughout the game.
