BGSU softball (10-6) had an eventful Sunday in Madeira Beach, Florida, opening with a dominant 2-0 shutout victory over Bethune-Cookman (4-16) before falling narrowly in a 5-4 walk-off battle against Siena (4-6).
The Falcons showcased both defensive resilience and offensive firepower across the two contests. While the pitching completely silenced the opposition in the morning matchup, the team suffered a late-game heartbreak against a tough Saints squad in game two.
Game One vs. Bethune-Cookman
The Falcons opened the day with a stifling defensive showcase, blanking Bethune-Cookman 2-0.
Senior pitcher Mackenzie Krafcik completely shut down the Wildcats, tossing a complete-game, four-hit shutout. She faced just four batters over the minimum, striking out two and issuing no walks while retiring 12 straight batters at one point.
Freshman outfielder Hannah Simko was the undisputed star of the offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate and driving in both of the game’s runs.
BGSU gave themselves all the advantage they would need in the second inning. Redshirt sophomore third baseman Addie Martin reached on an error and stole second, advancing to third on a single from junior outfielder Peyton Steffes. After Steffes stole second, Simko delivered a clutch two-run double to plate both runners and secure the 2-0 final.
Game Two vs. Siena
In the second matchup, the Falcons found themselves in a tight back-and-forth struggle against Siena, ultimately falling 5-4 in walk-off fashion.
Siena wasted no time getting on the board, striking for two runs in the bottom of the first inning. However, Bowling Green answered immediately in the top of the second when Martin drew a walk and sophomore catcher Ava McKee followed up by launching a two-run homer to tie the game. The blast marked the first official home run of her collegiate career.
The Falcons took the lead in the third inning on a two-out RBI single to left field from Martin. BGSU extended their advantage to 4-2 in the fifth when senior utility Katie Hutter was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, though the team struggled to capitalize further, leaving the bases loaded in both the fourth and fifth innings.
Sophomore pitcher Madison Wendel started in the circle for the Falcons and settled down impressively after a rocky first inning, allowing just two baserunners over her next five frames.
The Falcons attempted to close out the game in the seventh, but Siena mounted a massive rally. Following a leadoff throwing error and a single, Krafcik entered in relief, but the Saints managed to push across two runs to tie the game at 4-4.
With runners on first and second, Emma Peterson hit a walk-off double to cap the comeback and hand BGSU the 5-4 loss. Martin finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a run and an RBI.
