BGSU softball (15-14, 3-6) took a win and a loss to end their weekend series against Buffalo (14-18, 5-4 MAC) at Meserve Field Saturday.
Pitching to open the first Saturday contest was Alyvia Roth, who ultimately tossed four innings.
Buffalo began the scoring in the first inning with a solo shot from Emily Gorman.
The Falcons struck back in the third inning as a Cameron Kaufman RBI scored Peyton Steffes, and then Taylor Behrendt stole home to give the Falcons a one run lead, 2-1.
A few successful hits in the fourth inning tied the game. After this, the Bulls pulled ahead, scoring two runs in the fifth inning.
Both teams went scoreless through the sixth, and in the seventh inning, the Bulls extended their lead to five runs, leading 7-2 with the Falcons’ last chance at bat.
Bowling Green scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to only three, seemingly building some momentum. Despite this, star hitter Addie Martin ultimately struck out swinging to end the first game as the Falcons fell 7-4.
Between the Friday game and the first game of the doubleheader, the Falcons came fairly close but were unable to take a win.
“I felt that in the first one. We started competing, just late,” said head coach Michelle Gardner. “We just needed to start earlier.”
Going into game three, the Falcons took this mindset to heart, with Behrendt and Steffes scoring runs.
Later in the fourth inning, Hannah Hunt blew the game open with a three-run home run, scoring herself as well as Delaney Davis and Kaufman.
Another hit from Hunt, this time a single in the fifth inning resulted in two RBIs, with Kaufman and Behrendt scoring again.
The Orange and Brown controlled the final game of the weekend, only allowing one run throughout it, coming in the Bulls’ last at-bat in the sixth inning.
Entering the bottom of the sixth inning up 7-1, the Falcons only needed two runs to end the game on the spot.
Kaufman earned the first of these, scoring Hannah Simko after being walked with loaded bases.
Ashley Chevalier brought the game to an end with a single to second base, scoring Steffes for the walk-off run.
Morgan Beckham had a strong showing in the final game, pitching all six innings, and only allowing one earned run and five total hits.
“I thought [Morgan] hit her spots well, and she pitched great for us,” said Hunt. “She only allowed one run and we scored seven, so it didn’t matter.”
The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday at Meserve Field as they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Falcon Media Sports Network’s Ben Corak and Dawson Pelter will have the live radio broadcast of the game, with pregame starting at 3:45 p.m. and first pitch at 4 p.m. on WBGU 88.1 FM.
