The BGSU women’s tennis team (8-13, 2-6 MAC) hosted the Toledo Rockets (10-8, 6-2 MAC) on Sunday, losing 5-2.
The match was the end of the Falcons’ 2025-26 season, the fourth under head coach Mike Bonnell. The team has yet to record a winning season under Bonnell, but they did secure their first MAC wins with the coach this year, knocking off Eastern Michigan and Buffalo.
Sunday started with Toledo securing the doubles point, 2-1. Juniors Tia Clemens and Qianyu Liu lost 6-3; they were leading their match 3-1, but gave up five unanswered points to lose it.
Junior Libby Blair and freshman Kiera Taylor trailed 5-4, but tied the match at 5-5. However, their scoring began to dry up, and they lost 7-5.
The lone doubles win came from senior Leticia Fonseca and sophomore Konstantina Adamopolou. They also trailed 5-4, but tied it up at 5-5. They pulled ahead to make it 6-5 and went on to win 7-5.
Clemens (1) split her first two sets, winning the first 7-5 and losing the second 6-3.
Liu (2) had the best singles performance of any Falcons; she won her match in two sets, 6-4 and 6-1.
“I appreciated the team and the other girls’ support,” Liu said.
Taylor (3) won her match in two sets as well by a score of 6-4, 6-2. The final point of her match came on a long volley, which she won with a low-hit ball that bounced twice before Toledo sophomore Neha Guru could corral it.
“We told ourselves before today, let’s just try our best,” Taylor said. “It was an emotional day, but I think overall we fought hard and did well.”
Blair (4) had a rough outing, losing 6-1, 6-1 to a Toledo freshman from Moscow, Russia, Anastasia Akuginova.
Clemens’ match went long. Liu and Blair, their matches completed, watched from Court 2 as Clemens fell behind 3-0 in the final set. She scored to make it 3-1, but sophomore JJ Scholten scored again to make it 4-1.
Adamopolou (5) lost her first set 7-5. She trailed in the second set, but tied it up at 5-5. At this point, the score of the overall match was 2-2, with three more points up for grabs.
Clemens went on to lose her third set 6-1. Toledo now led 3-2, with the Falcons needing both Adamopolou and Fonseca to win. Both players tied their second sets at 6-6.
Adamopolou lost her second set 7-6 on a tiebreaker, as Toledo secured the win. Fonseca lost hers as well to finish the match and the season.
“I want them to come back in the best shape of their lives, be ready for the fall,” Bonnell said. “We have some good competitive freshmen coming in, so that’s what we’re looking for…beating Eastern Michigan and Buffalo are really good signs for the future.”
Taylor feels that the team grew over the course of the season.
“I think we did much better than in the fall. In the fall, we were not as connected as a group, but in the spring, we had a team meeting and got closer,” Taylor said. “And that shows on the court.”
The Orange and Brown will enter their offseason now and will resume action in the fall, with coverage available at bgfalconmedia.com.
