BGSU women’s tennis coach Mike Bonnell will not have his contract renewed, the university announced in a press release Monday.
“The decision to not renew Coach Bonnell’s contract was made after a thorough review and evaluation of our women’s tennis program,” Vice President for Athletics Strategy and Director of Athletics Derek van der Merwe said. “BGSU Athletics remains committed to positioning all our programs for comprehensive excellence and creating an environment where our student-athletes can thrive both in competition and beyond. We are extremely appreciative of Mike’s contributions and commitment to Bowling Green State University these past four years and wish him the very best moving forward.”
Bonnell coached the Falcons the past four seasons after getting hired on Aug. 22, 2022. He amassed an overall record of 30-58, including a 2-36 mark in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play.
Bonnell recently wrapped up his most successful season at the helm of the Falcons, going 8-13 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Bonnell was the final hire of former BGSU athletics director Bob Moosbrugger on Aug. 22, 2022, who was fired just two days later on Aug. 24, 2022.
The university announced they will immediately begin a national search for the program’s next head coach.
